This painting was inspired by my first visit to Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. It was one of those rare winter days when the air was crisp, the sky brilliantly clear, and every colour in the landscape seemed heightened by the cold. Standing beside Dove Lake, I was struck by the stillness. The mountain rose quietly beyond the water, its rugged peaks reflected in the lake, while the alpine grasses glowed with unexpected oranges, golds and greens.
What stayed with me wasn't simply the grandeur of the mountain, but the feeling of being completely present in that moment—the silence, the fresh mountain air, and the way light transformed an ordinary walk into something unforgettable. It reminded me that landscapes are more than places we visit; they become part of our own story.
Rather than recreate the scene exactly as I saw it, I wanted to capture the memory of the experience through expressive colour and energetic brushwork. My hope is that this painting invites viewers to pause for a moment, imagine themselves standing at the water's edge, and remember a place that made them stop, breathe and simply look.
