First Camellias of Spring - Diptych

First Camellias of Spring is a diptych celebrating the arrival of colour after winter. Inspired by camellias from my garden in early spring, my aim was for these two paintings to capture the abundance and optimism of the season as deep crimson and pink blooms emerge amongst rich green foliage.

Painted with expressive, visible brushwork, the flowers are set against bold turquoise and red stripes, bringing a playful contemporary energy to the traditional floral still life. Designed as a pair, the works echo one another without being identical, creating a lively conversation of colour, shape and pattern.

The diptych reflects my ongoing interest in the small, everyday moments that often go unnoticed — flowers gathered from the garden, changing seasons and the unexpected combinations of colour found in ordinary life.
