Gathered Bluebells is part of a series of eight small still-life paintings celebrating the flowers that begin to appear after a long, cold Tasmanian winter.
There’s something special about seeing bluebells emerge after the garden has been quiet for so long. Their soft blue-violet colour and gently drooping forms are such a lovely sign that the garden is waking up again. I gathered these from the garden and placed them in the same little glass vase that appears throughout the series.
Painted loosely and expressively, I wanted to capture the feeling of the bluebells rather than every detail—their movement, their slightly unruly stems and that beautiful blue-purple against the fresh greens.
