Gathered Camellias is part of a series of eight small still-life paintings celebrating the flowers that begin to appear after a long, cold Tasmanian winter.
Camellias grow in huge abundance in my garden, and their arrival is one of those lovely signs that the seasons are beginning to change. After months of the garden feeling quiet and asleep, suddenly there are these beautiful bursts of pink everywhere.
I wanted to capture that feeling rather than paint the flowers too precisely—using loose brushstrokes, strong colour and simplified shapes to express the abundance and energy of the camellias in bloom.
