With this piece, I wanted to move into something a little more contemporary and graphic in style. The vase itself really inspired the composition — its bold dark shape felt almost sculptural, and I loved how it created such a strong contrast against the softer pink roses and lighter background.
Rather than painting the roses in a traditional way, I was interested in simplifying the forms and leaning into pattern, line, and shape. The circular markings within the blooms almost became decorative elements of their own, giving the painting a playful and modern feel.
I also loved the balance between softness and structure here — the organic leaves and flowers sitting against the flatter blocks of colour and bold outlines. For me, this work is about reimagining a familiar floral subject in a more contemporary context, where colour, composition, and design become just as important as the flowers themselves.
I have added some gold leaf to enhance the design.
