Each year, for only a few short weeks, our peony bushes burst into bloom, and I find myself completely drawn to them. There’s something so special about their brief appearance — almost as though you have to stop and really notice them before they disappear again for another year.
I believe this variety is a single peony, and I love how delicate and open the blooms are. Unlike the fuller, heavier peonies, these seem lighter and softer, with petals that almost feel translucent in the light.
With this painting, I wanted to capture not just the beauty of the flowers, but their softness and gentle presence. The loose brushstrokes and flowing colour were important to me because I wanted the painting to feel fresh, light-filled, and slightly fleeting — much like the flowers themselves.
For me, paintings like this are about those small seasonal moments that quietly bring joy — flowers gathered from the garden, colour filling a room, and the reminder to slow down and appreciate something beautiful while it’s here
